Cutting the costs of natural gas storage with optical moisture detection

Using optical moisture detection to reduce the costs and risks associated with storing natural gas is the focus of a new application note published by Michell Instruments this month: Gas storage: reduce risks and cut costs with optical moisture detection.

Storing natural gas is an important part of all energy companies’ strategies to cope with peaks and troughs in demand for power, which is affected by different daily and seasonal conditions. Natural gas is often stored underground in depleted hydrocarbon fields, aquifers and salt caverns, which have the advantage of being discrete and easily accessible. However, as these places are often damp, before it can be used the stored natural gas needs to have moisture levels measured to determine if it needs to be dried before it is pumped into the transmission network.

Michell’s new application note examines the options that are available to energy companies for responsive and reliable moisture measurements using optical techniques. You can download the full report here.
