Ditton Lane Cross City Cycling project complete

The final piece of a new first-class cycling route that will make it safer and easier for people to travel into Cambridge has been completed.

The existing path and cycleway in Ditton Lane has been widened to between 2.2m and 2.5m to put the finishing touches to the Ditton Lane/East Cambridge Cross City Cycling scheme.

The route is part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s £8m Cross City Cycling network, which has seen thousands of people benefit from better journeys on foot and bicycle – encouraging active travel to improve air quality and help reduce congestion on the roads.

Cllr Roger Hickford, chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Ditton Lane Cross City Cycling project has been completed – this will make it safer and easier for people to travel around on foot or by bike, and will particularly help families travelling to Fen Ditton Primary School.

“With the final piece of the Cross City Cycling network to be completed next year and the lifting of the Abbey-Chesterton Bridge for the flagship Chisholm Trail, the GCP is expanding and enhancing our active travel routes to encourage more people to get out of their cars.”

Construction on the final piece of the Cross City Cycling puzzle will be carried out early in the New Year with the addition of two floating bus stops as part of the Fulbourn Road scheme.

This work will also include a lead-in cycle lane to the Robin Hood junction and will be built during Cambridgeshire County Council’s planned upgrade of the junction in 2021.

The GCP’s five Cross City Cycling schemes are:

  • Arbury Road
  • Cambridge North Links
  • Fulbourn/Cherry Hinton Eastern Access
  • Hills Road and Addenbrooke’s
  • Ditton Lane/East Cambridge

The GCP’s Executive Board has also approved 11 of 12 proposed Greater Cambridge Greenways, which will provide high-quality active travel routes between the city and surrounding towns and villages. The final route, Haslingfield, is due before the Board for a decision in December.

Construction is also underway on the Chisholm Trail and Abbey Chesterton Bridge which was lifted over the River Cam last week.

When complete, the Chisholm Trail will provide a mostly off-road walking and cycling link between Cambridge North and the employment sites in the north to Cambridge Station and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus via the city centre.
