Between now and November all properties will be sent an inquiry form to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered and can have their say at the ballot box.
Every household must respond to the inquiry form even if there is no-one to register or residents have only recently registered to vote.
Residents are encouraged to respond to the inquiry form by going online to www.elecreg.co.uk/cambridge and using the two-part security code on the front of the form. The form can also be returned by post, using the pre-paid envelope provided, if access to the internet is not possible.
Antoinette Jackson, electoral registration officer and Cambridge City Council chief executive said: “Responding to our inquiry form is very simple. All you have to do is go online and tell us who should be registered at your address.
“It is vital that you respond to the inquiry form, even if there are no changes or you only recently registered to vote.
“We need to be confident that the data we hold is correct, but more importantly, that everyone who is entitled to vote can do so in any upcoming elections.”
British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens who are normally resident in Cambridge can register to vote in the city. Students can register at their Cambridge term-time address as well as their home address if it is outside the city, but can only vote once in the same poll.
For more information, you can contact Cambridge electoral services on 01223 457048, elections@cambridge.gov.uk or visit www.cambridge.gov.uk/registertovote.
Notes
The register of electors is audited every year to ensure that elector’s information is correct and those who are eligible to vote have registered. Households that do not respond to the inquiry form will receive a reminder in September and further non-responders will receive a personal visit from an electoral canvasser during October. Registering to vote is an individual responsibility and separate from the annual audit inquiry form. Anyone identified as eligible but not registered will be sent an invitation to register and encouraged to do so.
The revised register of electors will be published on 1 December 2016.
The next scheduled elections in the city are for Cambridgeshire County Council on 4 May 2017.
