Downing College opens refurbished facilities with client 'thank you'

A Cambridge College is celebrating the re-opening of recently refurbished Conference facilities by making a presentation to the organisers of the first course to be run at the building 26 years ago – and the first to return to experience the new look.

The Master of Downing College, Professor Geoffrey Grimmett presented a specially-engraved plaque to Beryl Hobbs, Trustee of the Napp Educational Foundation Course for Community Matrons and Nurses as a thank you for their support and loyalty.

The Foundation’s flagship course was created in recognition of the increasing role of nurses taking more responsibility for the care of patients at home and the need to offer them quality education.

Thirty-five community nurses are brought together for each four-day residential course which is held three times a year at Downing College.

The Howard Building at Downing College has just undergone a six-month intensive refurbishment programme to improve its energy efficiency and green credentials, in terms of heating, lighting and insulation and to upgrade its technical specification.

Professor Grimmett said: “I am delighted to present this special plaque to the Napp Educational Foundation as a mark of our thanks for using the College for its courses. It is particularly fitting that the Foundation should be the first organisation to use the refurbished facilities as the community nurse courses were also the first to be held at the Howard Building when it was inaugurated 26 years ago. We look forward to continuing our working partnership for many years to come.”

Beryl Hobbs added: “We have been using Downing College for our courses now for 26 years, initially to host the District Nurse Course in Palliative Care, funded by Napp Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and since 2005 as a registered charity under the Napp Educational Foundation banner, with an enhanced programme for long-term chronic conditions. During this time, we have developed special relationships with the Conference team. We feel very special to be the first event in the refurbished Howard Building which is a stunning setting for our courses”.

The Howard Building comprises a 150-seat lecture theatre fully equipped with the latest AV facilities which opens out onto a sunken garden and a large reception area which is suitable for registration, coffee and tea breaks and networking.

Funding for the courses is made possible by the Napp Educational Foundation, a registered charity which receives an annual grant from Napp Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
