The project to renovate and refurbish Parkers’ House, Regent Street to create 78 student bedrooms necessitated the erection of a full scaffold along the 90-metre front elevation, paying careful attention to the many shop frontages below which clearly needed to trade whilst the works were taking place.
Richard Monument, Downing College’s Senior Contracts Manager and his team were presented with the Considerate Contractor Award 2015 at a ceremony at King’s College.
Monthly visits to the College were made by Cambridge City Council representatives throughout the duration of the works to prepare site reports on progress, including taking photos.
Nick Milne, Construction Monitoring Officer at Cambridge City Council said: “Richard and his team fully deserved to win this award. They established good relationships with the shop tenants early on in the project, including holding several meetings before the work even started.
“The judges take into consideration the complexity of a particular site, whether for deliveries, access, or issues over the works that could affect nearby residents/ business premises, all of which was the case at Parker’s House.
“One thing that I am sure that they were impressed with at Downing College was the site hoarding which took into account the numerous shop frontages ensuring that unobstructed access was maintained. The presentation of this throughout the period of works remained excellent.”
Richard Monument added: “We were delighted to receive this Award in recognition of our efforts to maintain good relationships with our neighbours during our recent construction project. At Downing, we are committed to carrying out building works with as little disruption as possible and this accolade reflects our team’s success in achieving this.”
Cambridge City Council’s Considerate Contractor Scheme is supported by the Cambridge Forum For The Construction Industry and Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. It is a voluntary scheme that asks members to commit to a code of good practice which is over and above the legal minimum requirements, to ensure that construction work doesn't make life unpleasant for people who live and work nearby.
