Cambridge-based product design and development consultancy, eg technology have worked with Sphere Medical over the last two years to develop both the Pelorus 1000 (a research instrument) and the Pelorus 1500 IVD which offer the unique capability to rapidly measure the concentration of the intravenous anaesthetic Propofol in whole blood samples.
Propofol achieved a degree of notoriety when a fatal overdose was administered to Michael Jackson in 2009, but it is one of the world's most widely used intravenous anaesthetics. The Pelorus 1500 IVD greatly increases the safety of using Propofol by allowing anaesthetists to measure the actual, rather than predicted, concentration of the drug within a patient's blood, enabling personalised dosing.
