eLife has announced that Eve Marder, Professor in the Biology Department and the Volen Center of Brandeis University, will become a third Deputy Editor for the non-profit initiative. Marder’s promotion from Senior Editor, plus the addition of more than 50 other editors over the last nine months, signal widening adoption of eLife as a venue for outstanding research across disciplines in the life sciences and biomedical research.
The eLife journal, which introduced its first papers less than three years ago – in October 2012 – has now published over 1000 research articles in 14 major subject areas, ranging from human genetics and neuroscience to biophysics and epidemiology. The journal also features collections relating to the Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology and the Natural History of Model Organisms.
Establishing eLife as a centre for groundbreaking science is the first step in the initiative’s ambition to accelerate discovery by transforming the way important results are selected, presented, and shared.
“Eve Marder is one of our most committed champions,” says Randy Schekman, eLife Editor-in-Chief. “She speaks eloquently to the need for reform in peer review and to abandon the constraints imposed on us by a print-focused communication model. She has led the way in implementing our novel approach to peer review, and provided crucial support to her colleagues as they have had to challenge their own preconceptions about how quality science should be judged. She is a very welcome addition to the eLife leadership team.”
Eve Marder is the Victor and Gwendolyn Beinfield Professor of Neuroscience at Brandeis University and Past President of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Biophysical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Neuroethology. She is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including the Miriam Salpeter Award from WIN, the WF Gerard Prize from the SfN, the Miller Prize from the Society for Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Gruber Prize in Neuroscience.
Marder is also a regular contributor to eLife through her ‘Living science’ series, in which she has written passionately on topics including the use of metrics in research assessment, the rewards of a career in science, and the importance of taking time to work in a different country.
As eLife Deputy Editor, Marder assumes additional responsibility for assigning manuscripts to Senior Editors. She joins Fiona Watt (King’s College London) and Detlef Weigel (Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology), and will report to Editor-in-Chief Randy Schekman (University of California, Berkeley).
