Excite your audience

If you look bored, don't expect your audience to bring all the energy.

Not sure how to get your audience excited? Then you're not excited.

Find the thing that you really connect with in your talk or presentation. 'But Jon, it's just data.' Then why are you giving a talk at all? 'It's the monthly company update'. Well, how about you send the data in an email (if you're really keen on a dramatic reveal, send it afterwards), and use the time you have together to tell them how happy/excited/impressed (delete as appropriate) you are with their work?

If you're going to bring people together for a big meeting, make it mean something. Please don't waste their time with a tedious set of slides. Put some photos of actual employees having fun on the screen, not several awful slides of data. Put in a funny chart instead. Tell stories, and shine a light on people's hard work and successes that benefitted the company (and just as important, successes in their non-work life). Namecheck people, give them public recognition.

This takes minimum effort, but gives maximum impact.
