The awards, held last week, are dedicated to recognising organisations and individuals who have made a difference to financial services.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Stephen to recognise his numerous successes within his 34 year career in the sector. More specifically, within his 12 year tenure as Chief Executive of The Cambridge he led the Society to grow its asset size to over £1.4bn and a reported record year of lending in 2018. Stephen has achieved this whilst keeping The Cambridge a thriving, mutual business committed to its members and serving the local community in the best way.
Stephen also led investment into the Society’s branch network ensuring that the customer experience in store complements the progress the Society continues to make to its digital offering.
Alongside his role at The Cambridge, Stephen became Chairman of the Building Societies Association in 2018. Representing the whole building society sector, he chaired the BSA through another successful year.
This commemoration is timely with The Cambridge recently announcing the appointment of their new Chief Executive, Peter Burrows.
Jonathan Spence, Chairman of The Cambridge comments on Stephen’s achievement, “Stephen has dedicated his professional career to not only the people of Cambridge, but to the sector and local community too remaining forever passionate for the industry in which he has worked for over 30 years. We are thrilled to celebrate this achievement with Stephen and wish him all the best for the future.”
