The proposals envisage purpose-built sports facilities and competition venues for rowing, triathlon, BMX, cycling, canoeing, long-distance swimming, equestrian and fishing. They also propose two residential accommodation units for wardens and a multi-use public country park around the lake.
A public consultation into the more detailed plans, known as a reserved matters application, is now underway, and runs until 30 March.
The estimated £25 million complex was originally granted outline planning permission in 2013. This planning permission provides for:
- 3.2 km of quality water connected to the River Cam
- A 2 km long international standard competition course that would be at least 100m wide
- A triathlon facility
- A three-mile-long cycle circuit
- A BMX track
- A lake stocked with fish for angling
- 100 acres of woodland around the lake
Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust, the group behind the project, have now submitted more detailed proposals for various aspects of the facility. These are the elements the public are now being asked to comment on, and include:
- A sports centre
- A boathouse
- Finish line towers
- Wardens accommodation
- Bus shelters and cycle shelters
- Amenity blocks
- Landscaping around proposed structures
- Drainage arrangements
Cllr Robert Turner, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “This consultation focusses on one part of what is a significant proposal. It is important that local people share their views on it with us before the Council makes a decision. Everyone’s comments are welcome and will be taken into account.”
