Health news from The Travel Clinic

As of 17 Dec 2012, suspected cases of typhoid fever have been reported in Afghanistan. The most affected areas were south and south-east regions. Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers to Afghanistan, but this vaccine has been in short supply over the last couple of months. However, the good news is that The Travel Clinic Ltd now has stock of the injectable typhoid as well as the oral typhoid.

The United States is in the grip of an especially virulent flu season.  At least 41 US states have reported outbreaks, with more than 2,500 people being hospitalizsd and 18 children dying from it before the end of 2012 (Catholic Online).  Health officials say the numbers haven't even peaked yet.

In 2012, flu-related pneumonia and deaths peaked in early January. That season was considered a "moderately severe" season for flu, and ended in mid-February. Officials say it's still too early to tell how bad this year's flu season will get.
