Inspiring over 450 students at Form the Future’s 3rd annual Primary Careers Fair

Form the Future welcomed over 450 children to meet with 24 businesses at Cambridge Regional College for the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) Primary School Careers Fair on Tuesday, 5 March 2024. Children aged 9 to 11 years old from 9 Cambridgeshire-based schools explored a wide range of jobs and industries through interacting with their employees.

Small groups of young people moved around the fair taking part in interactive activities bringing to life the unique experiences offered by each employer. From construction companies to bankers, archaeologists to physicists, and planners to animators, a wide spectrum of the local labour market was represented.

Highlights included practising CPR skills with Royal Papworth Hospital, learning about town planning with Greater Cambridge Shared Planning, trying on Mott McDonald’s hard hats and protective clothing, understanding sustainability relating to food, farming and the environment with LEAF Education and testing their bravery in rock climbing with Fenland Adventure.

This unique event was funded by the Greater Cambridge Partnership and was part of a larger careers event which also saw hundreds of students from Cambridge Regional College meeting with local employers during an afternoon session.

“Careers education is vital starting from primary school age right through to Post-16 and adulthood. We were delighted to host the primary school event and to welcome over 60 employers in the afternoon too to encourage our students to think about their next steps, as well as school leavers from across the country and adults seeking jobs and career changes.”

Mo Horan - Assistant Principal, Cambridge Regional College

“Greater Cambridge has so many exciting career opportunities on offer for everyone, and so it was great to see so many young people inspired by what they could do in the future. We’d like to thank all the employers and Form the Future and CRC for delivering the career fair. The event was funded by the GCP as part of our commitment to boost apprenticeships, help people find out more about their future careers and support the region’s economic growth.”

Niamh Matthews - Head of Strategy and Programme, Greater Cambridge Partnership

“We are delighted to be managing the Primary School Careers Fair for the third consecutive year. It’s never too early to inspire children to think about careers and possibilities right here in our region, raising aspirations and reducing stereotypes. We would like to thank our business partners who supported this event and helped to bring careers to life through a range of interactive activities.”
