Anglia Ruskin University is hosting a classical music concert in aid of the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice at Peterborough Cathedral on Friday, 1 February (7pm).
Generously sponsored by Globe Education Services (UK) Ltd, the concert will see Anglia Ruskin’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Thorne, conduct the Cyprus Sinfonia and talented 20-year-old soloist Agnes Langer in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
Also in the programme will be Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, which will make special use of Peterborough Cathedral’s superb acoustics, and Arvo Pärt’s Symphony No 3.
Budapest-born Langer is based in Germany, where she studies with Professor Anne Shih at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz. Langer has won a number of prestigious awards and competitions, including the 2006 Bartók National Violin Duo Competition, the coveted Körösföi-Kriesch Aladàr Prize for promising young artists in 2007, and the Zathureczky National Violin Competition in Budapest in 2008.
Langer, who accomplished the amazing feat of learning all 24 Paganini Caprices at the age of 15, plays a 1780 Carlo Antonio Testore violin loaned to her by a British sponsor. She made her London debut in July when she was partnered by Pavel Kolesnikov, the recent Honens piano competition winner, in a recital at St John’s Smith Square.
Professor Thorne said: “As well as a wonderful programme of music, the evening will feature a retiring collection for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, where our Peterborough-based Health and Social Care students go on placements as part of their studies.
“The hospice provides vital support when people have been diagnosed with a life-changing illness. They provide compassionate care and support for people with palliative, long-term and end of life needs, and we are proud that our students form part of this care.”
Tickets, which includes interval refreshments, are priced at £10 (concessions £6) and are available on the door or in advance from the Mumford Theatre box office by calling 0845 196 2320 or visiting www.anglia.ac.uk/mumfordtheatre For further information, please contact Andrea Hilliard on 0845 196 4727 or andrea.hilliard@anglia.ac.uk
