Now the Company is doing it for charity as well. From noon today (29 August) to noon tomorrow, Marshall is running a four-bike 24-hour Cyclothon in the Gipsy Moth Restaurant to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support, Movember, Cancer Research and Milton Hospice. The cyclothon waqs started at midday by Cllr George Pippas (Deputy Mayor of the City of Cambridge).
George Pippas said: “I would like to thank the Marshall Group of Companies for inviting me to launch this 24-hour Cyclothon, which fits very well with my Council’s vision, which is for Cambridge to be a place where people matter; is a good place to live, learn and work; and a place which cares for the planet. The promotion of cycling improves fitness, reduces dependency on cars and thereby reduces carbon emissions. It is extremely commendable that the Company’s ‘Cycle4Summer’ initiative has been turned into a charity fund raising event.”
The respective team leaders and their chosen charities are
Malcolm Kitteridge (SEM for MLS) | MacMillan Cancer Support |
Jamie Maguire (IT Business Analyst ADG) | Movember |
George Thackray (QA Engineer ADG) | Cancer Research |
Fergus Thornton (Senior Systems Support Engineer) | Milton Hospice |
The team leaders will keep their bikes going continuously for 24 hours with their team members taking it in turns every half hour or more for those that are really keen!
The bikes will be provided by Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Cambridge, with which Marshall Sports and Social Club have a close relation.
Terry Holloway, Group Support Executive said: “The Company has a proud record of encouraging cycling and built the Airport Way Cycle Path in the 1980s alongside the airfield. Subsequently we provided part of the cycle path which links Newmarket Road Park and Ride Site to the City Centre.”
Holloway added: “We are particularly proud of our employees who raise much needed funds for charity”.
