Ward Manager Katrina Quinn, Sister Ruth Pethurst and Principal Pharmacy Technician Sarah Gray were joined by Stuart Costello, Mick George Ltd’s Marketing Manager and patients to bury the capsule in the Outpatients Garden, which is being re-landscaped thanks to Mick George Ltd.

The capsule was packed with memorabilia including photographs from the anniversary year’s events, postcards depicting old Addenbrooke’s, certificates of staff who’ve won the hospital’s You Made a Difference awards, the brochure from the 250th anniversary Fundraising Gala and a timeline showing how charitable support has made a difference for patients over the years.

Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust arranged the commemorative event and Stephen Davies, the charity’s chief executive, said:  “Addenbrooke’s is the result of one man’s vision, John Addenbrooke, who left a legacy in his will.  It is thanks to his kindness that the region’s patients can receive such excellent care today.

“I’m delighted to say that the community’s support for patient care continues and generous donors and fundraisers have spent the year responding to our special Addenbrooke’s 250 Appeal.  We look forward to making a formal announcement about the appeal’s total early in 2017.  We’ve been delighted by supporters’ kindness.”

Mike More, Interim Chair at the hospital, added: “To mark the end of our Trust’s important milestone we wanted to join Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust in acknowledging the supporters who have donated and fundraised during the celebrations and to thank staff for their contribution.  The time capsule is very much about the future and how we in 2016 have played our part in what comes next.

“Addenbrooke’s Hospital looks very different now, and we’ve marked the year through a series of events, including the opening of our Museum for Addenbrooke’s in October.  Today we are burying a record of those celebrations and memories for people to find in times to come.  We hope they’ll be as proud of the hospital and its staff as we are.”

Helping on the day, Stuart Costello, Mick George Ltd’s Marketing Manager, said: “We have been honoured to join in the special celebrations.  The capsule is marked on the Outpatients Garden map, so keen historians 50 years from now can unearth it.  In the meantime, we hope the new garden, which will be ready for the spring, will be a place of peace for patients and their families for many years into the future.”
