MP welcomes Trinity College divestment

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner has welcomed Trinity College's announcement that it will remove all of its public and private investments in the fossil fuel industry by 2031 and work to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The news follows the announcement last October that the University of Cambridge will divest from fossil fuels and pursue a dedicated net-zero plan, and similar commitments from Christ’s, Clare Hall and Pembroke.

As the richest Cambridge College, Trinity, with land holdings of 13,335 acres that have been valued at £730 million, this is a move of national significance.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: "This is hugely significant. The student-led campaign for divestment has been a constant in my time as MP. I am delighted that consistent, evidence-led campaigning and persuasion, has led to this day.

"What is exciting now is that Cambridge is leading on promoting the transition to a low carbon world by focusing on research to achieve this.

"As we look forward to hosting COP26, Trinity's decision is a huge boost to the global vision of a sustainable and equitable zero-carbon future.”
