Murray Edwards Art Tour adds new dimension to events

Event organisers can now enhance the appeal of their conferences and meetings by incorporating a private Art Tour at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge. The college is home to more than 450 modern and contemporary artworks by women artists – widely regarded as the most significant collection of its kind in Europe.

The New Hall Art Collection is located throughout the contemporary College, which is light and airy, providing a spacious setting for the paintings, drawings and sculptures. Artworks also feature in many of the meeting spaces and public areas such as breakout rooms, areas for catering and networking and in the spectacular Dome dining hall.

The Art Collection’s Curator, Eliza Gluckman (pictured) - who highlights particular works of interest -carries out private tours.

Eliza says: “The New Hall Art Collection ranges from collage, painting and drawing to sculpture, film and photography. It is an open collection we actively collect – over the last six months we have been offered generous donations by established and emerging artists.

“In terms of well-known artists we have works by Maggi Hambling and Dame Paula Rego – both of whom are Honorary Fellows of the College – as well as works by Tracey Emin, Bridget Riley, Gillian Ayres and Dame Elisabeth Frink.

“The Collection really stems from the history of the College. The building is by the famous Brutalist architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bonn and the long brick and concrete walls lend themselves to having art hung on them. As an all-women college, our ethos is to research the educational needs of women and to create a place to nurture achievement in the wider world. The collection is an exciting, inspirational backdrop to College life and also reflects the diversity of people’s lives.”

Freya Vaughan, Marketing & Events Officer added: “Being able to offer our  prestigious Art Tour to event organisers is adding significant value to their delegates visit to Cambridge. Pieces from the Collection are installed all around the College, which gives it a unique and inspiring atmosphere, enhancing many of the spaces used for events such as meetings, conferences and fine dining.”

The catalogue for this permanent collection was re-launched at prestigious events at the Royal Academy of Art in London and at Sotheby’s in New York last year. Copies can be ordered online for £15. Groups can enjoy the Art Tour for a fee of £50 which is donated to the Art Collection.
