Addenbrooke’s Abroad, the charitable programme that supports staff volunteering overseas, and Cambridge University Hospitals have been officially partnered with the Myanmar Ministry of Health and Yangon General Hospital since 2014.
However, a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated volunteers from Addenbrooke’s in the trauma and orthopaedics department, clinical pathology department and clinical skills laboratory have been working with healthcare professionals in Myanmar since early 2013, with the hope of making a lasting difference to the lives of its population.
The reciprocal visit from the minister of health in support of the partnership provided the opportunity for the Addenbrooke’s volunteers to demonstrate the passion of staff in both countries who are working together to improve healthcare.
David Wherrett, Chair of Addenbrooke’s Abroad and Director of Workforce for Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) said:
“We were honoured to welcome Prof Dr U Than Aung, Minister of Health Myanmar and his delegation to CUH.
It was clear from the presentations that overseas work not only benefits our partners but also brings tremendous benefits back to our hospitals and the NHS.
The visit cemented our relationship with Myanmar and Yangon General Hospital and we look forward to many years of collaboration.”
The Addenbrooke’s Abroad team hopes that the partnership developed between Yangon General Hospital and Addenbrooke’s will help medical and surgical practitioners make steady and sustainable progress to create a big impact in healthcare.
