Myra Gylks worked for two years at the College from 1994 and then returned after maternity leave to work as a part-time bartender for another two years. In 2002 she became a food and beverage assistant, a position that she has been in for the past 18 years. I n 2017 she was given the opportunity to start the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Food and Beverage Service, an opportunity she embraced.
“I felt that it was a great opportunity to educate myself and develop my skills,” says Myra. “The college has always been very supportive. I go to CRC every Tuesday and am due to finish my NVQ later this year.”
Says Alexis Moreau, Head of Conference and Catering Services at Robinson College: “Investing in people is a priority for the College. This award is a fantastic achievement and really shows Myra’s commitment to learning and developing her skills and also her commitment to the College. It’s has not always been easy for her to stay motivated and to juggle work and homework. This award is very well deserved.”
On selecting her for the award, CRC said: “Myra has excellent attendance and always works hard to learn more in class. She is 100 per cent committed to gaining new skills in the industry. Myra is always pushing herself to do better, to develop herself academically and practically on the apprenticeship. She is a real asset to her employer and peers. “
Robinson is one of the newest colleges in the University of Cambridge. It was founded with a donation by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir David Robinson and formally opened in 1981. It has 80 Fellows and around 400 undergraduate and 200 graduate students.
