Session Synopsis

In the face of decarbonisation, the emergence of variable and intermittent generation technologies, and technological change in the electricity industry such as the emergence of smart grids, the traditional market and regulatory models that have implemented internationally over the last 30 years to promote efficiency through competition are coming under stress.

Generators are seeing the value derived from traditional sources of revenue, such as the sale of energy, eroded, with increasing emphasis on subsidy, grid services and capacity mechanisms.  Grid companies are also facing challenges associated with significant investment requirements to accommodate new technologies, grid bypass and defection facilitated by growth in Distributed Energy Resources, and pressure from regulators to innovate to adopt new technologies.

Richard will explain the economic principles behind the market and regulatory models that have been used traditionally in the electricity sector and why they are coming under stress.  He will also suggest how regulatory and market models can evolve to meet these challenges.

NERA will also discuss markets in a session jointly with UtilityWise plc.
