The IIMP, based within Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School, engages with businesses and organisations to study international management practices and understand their impact on organisational performance and innovation, as well as on economic and cultural development.
Professor Down’s previous role was as Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University, where he worked for eight years, and he has also held academic posts at the University of Wollongong, in Australia, and Plymouth University. He was also co-director of Newcastle’s Centre for Knowledge, Innovation, Technology and Enterprise, and was until recently the Editor of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research.
He began his working life as an entrepreneur in the independent music sector before working for London Underground. In his late twenties he attended the London School of Economics and, after a year teaching English in Berlin, he studied for an MA in Industrial Relations at the University of Warwick.
Professor Down is the author of Narratives of Enterprise: Crafting Entrepreneurial Self-identity in a Small Firm (Edward Elgar, 2006), an ethnographic study of a small firm in the UK, and the textbook Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Small Business (Sage, 2010).
He said: “Anglia Ruskin is making an enormous investment to develop research in the business school. I am excited at the opportunity to build an internationally respected institute focused on research into the managerial practices that underpin enterprise and innovation.”
Other recent appointments to Anglia Ruskin’s IIMP include Professor Magdy Abdel-Kader and Dr Emanuele Giovannetti. Professor Abdel-Kader, the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Management Accounting Research (IJMAR), has joined the IIMP as Professor of Management Accounting.
Dr Giovannetti, a Reader in Economics, is researching regional innovation activities in Europe, and competition strategies and policies for the Internet sector. As an economic advisor to the Office of Fair Trading, Dr Giovannetti worked on the new European regulations for competition policy in network industries.
As a Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, he led a European research project on competition in the Internet. Before joining Anglia Ruskin he was also Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Verona and the University of Cape Town. Dr Giovannetti has published articles in many leading academic journals and co-edited The Internet Revolution, a Global Perspective for Cambridge University Press (2007).
