New-look dining room whets the appetite for corporate events

A Cambridge College is celebrating the re-opening of one of its most popular spaces for client dinners after an imaginative refurbishment project.

Murray Edwards College has re-opened the doors to its Fellows’ Dining and Drawing Rooms; an all-inclusive space, ideal for dinners and drinks receptions. The rooms also feature an adjoining private garden.

Designer Eve Waldron has masterminded the makeover of the Drawing Room which centres around artwork from the New College Art Collection and colourful rugs. She says: “I have designed the high level windows in the FDR to complement the room and the artwork. As the furnishings and artwork are changeable, the idea was to come up with a simple, elegant solution which is timeless. A pattern of stripes gives the windows rhythm and movement and relates to the strong geometric lines of the building and room. The windows have clear portions and frosted portions, as well as a series of blue and blue green jewel-like lines of varying widths which evoke the colours of the sky as you look upwards.”

Freya Vaughan, Marketing & Events Officer added: “We are thrilled with the new image for our FDR which is already proving a hit with our conference and events visitors. It provides an intimate setting for dinners and is completely self-contained – for the drinks receptions too – so guests don’t have to move from one area of the College to another. The Fellows’ Garden, accessed through glass doors, has a lawn surrounded by leafy trees and borders of beautiful flowers and in the Summer months, it is perfect to enjoy drinks before coming indoors to eat.”

The FDR can accommodate 70 diners banquet-style on long tables, 40 cabaret-style and up to 150 for standing buffets and drinks receptions. AV equipment with portable projector, screen and audio is available on request.

Murray Edwards College is located in ten acres of peaceful gardens recently selected for inclusion in the ‘Good Gardens Guide’ and has two dedicated conference centres, providing flexible meeting space for a wide range of meetings  and events. With 70 free car parking spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis, it offers 162 modern en suite bedrooms during the University vacations, in addition to 12 in The Kaetsu Centre available year-round. Visitors can enjoy the extensive modern Art Collection on display throughout the College, comprising a wide range of works donated by female artists including sculptures in the gardens.
