New senior appointments at Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust

Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), the dedicated charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, is pleased to announce a number of trustee and senior management appointments. Those appointed bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm to guide and support the organisation as it strives to raise much-needed funds for the hospitals.

At the trustee board meeting on 25 June, David Robinson (pictured) was appointed as Chairman designate and will take up his new role on 1 October 2013. David, who is Chief Operating Officer (COO) with the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, has been a trustee of ACT since 2011.  In 2003, David was appointed Chief Operating Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of Ernst & Young's business operations across Northern Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. He was also a member of the firm's global practice council. David retired from Ernst & Young in 2008 and became COO of a niche Private Equity business, Vision Capital.

Keith Wade, Chief Economist at global asset management company Schroders, was appointed as Honorary Treasurer, having been involved with ACT since 2006.

Four new trustees have been appointed with effect from 1 July 2013:

Lynne Berry was recently identified by the Financial Times and Cranfield University as one of the ‘100 women to watch' and brings the benefit of a professional career in leading management posts including Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, the Family Welfare Association and the WRVS.  She has been Chair, Vice Chair and a trustee of many national and local charities including the Child Poverty Action Group and the National Council of Voluntary Organisations. She is a non-executive director for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Judy Ewer’s strengths include fundraising and communications, and she has strong links with the hospitals as the first Lead Governor and now Deputy Chairman of the Council of Governors.  Already a valued ACT supporter, Judy has recently been part of the Rosie Hospital Campaign Board which spearheaded the £3.5m fundraised for improvements in baby, maternity and fetal health.

Christopher Rees brings strong commercial, board level experience, having recently retired from a long career with Volvo Construction Equipment GB/Europe.  Christopher has strong voluntary sector experience too, including the coaching of fundraising teams to help them better understand the ‘voice of the donor’.

Dr Rosalind Smith has considerable experience of charity governance and grant-making, as well as financial and investment management.  She was co-founder of the Lancaster-Taylor Charitable Trust (which makes grants in the education sector), and a Principal of Basteir Investment, a fund of approx £130m, investing in a diverse portfolio.  She has also served as an executive and non-executive director of a number of limited companies.

Trustees were also pleased to confirm two key leadership positions:

Stephen Davies has been appointed as ACT’s Chief Executive, having held the post on an interim basis since August 2011.  Stephen has worked in the NHS for 20 years, initially in financial management and, more recently, as a strategist and planner with a special interest in NHS/University relationships.

Susanne Owers permanently takes up the post of Director of Fundraising, having held the position in an acting capacity since January 2012.  She was previously the charity’s Deputy Director of Fundraising, and has held senior management positions in several national and international non-profit organisations including WaterAid, Plan International UK and Crisis.

Commenting on the appointments, Mr David Hardy, current Chairman of ACT,  said: “We are delighted to announce these confirmed appointments.  We now have such rich and diverse talent among those who govern and manage our organisation, and I am sure they will complement existing board members well, bringing new and unique points of view as we embark on ambitious fundraising plans to support the future of Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie, and continue to make a difference for patients in the years ahead”.
