Cambridgeshire based home improvement company Admiral Homespace are warning homeowners of the potential for making costly mistakes when planning to add glazed extensions or Orangeries to their homes.
Genuine Orangeries are a classical addition to any home and can be designed as traditional or contemporary in appearance. Bi-Folding doors are often fitted to the front of these garden rooms, affording maximum opening to the garden.
Steve Thorogood the MD of Admiral comments ‘Unfortunately, many double glazing type companies are offering alternative Orangery structures at lower prices that are nothing more than conservatories with a pelmet type plinth running around the inside.

A proper Orangery should have a solid decking as well as a glazed lantern on top, therefore offering the solidity of an extension but with natural light flooding in from above. This combination is not easy to achieve due to the weight demands on the structure. Clients should be careful to ensure that the system employed is structurally proven and should always without exception be approved by building control.’
Steve advises that the popularity of the Orangery Garden Room has caught the eye of conservatory roof manufactures who see it as another way to sell more of their products. These ‘Mock Orangeries’ are poorly designed and look very much a cheap alternative to the real thing.
