The Over Day Centre received the biggest share of the pot and took away £2,400 after supporters collected a whopping 5,463 tokens.
Head of Administration Sarah Peck said: “We never thought we would get that kind of amount and were completely staggered when it was announced at the presentation event.”
The money went towards buying a new bus (pictured above) for the centre which provides care and support to the frail and elderly from Over and the surrounding villages. The charity took delivery of the bus earlier this month – a year after they launched the fundraising campaign to raise £67,000.
Sarah says spreading the word is a vital part of making sure as many tokens as possible are collected. As well as relying on the 70 volunteers, clients and their families, Sarah also used social media to let people know what was happening.
She said: “The more people who know the better. We are lucky because we have quite a big following anyway and are also very friendly with the WI groups in local villages as well as other community-based groups.
“It was just so lovely that so many people got behind us and took the time to cut out so many tokens. We were overwhelmed with the response. The new bus is going to make such a difference to what we do.”
The final token for 2015’s Cash for the Community campaign will be printed in the Cambridge News on Saturday 4 April.
