The Pathology Clinical Support Training Centre offers a wide range of high-quality training services including phlebotomy, canulation and catheterisation. In addition a number of bespoke courses are available to help health practitioners responsible for supporting patients with point-of-care testing services.
All training is provided by the CUH’s experienced team of clinical services managers at modern facilities in Newmarket.
Tracey Murray, pathology training centre lead, said: “We are delighted to launch our new Pathology Clinical Support Training Centre. We have always trained our own staff and we have a proven track record of running this kind of training working with key health providers.
“This is a great opportunity for us to branch out and allow more people who are interested in clinical services to try some of our new courses.
“Our new centre offers the most comprehensive training programme for pathology in the east of England, including clinical support and point-of-care testing services. It means that we can ensure that healthcare professionals have access to high-quality training to enable them to offer the very best in patient care.
CUH’s clinical support services team has been offering this type of training for 15 years. During this time has trained a wide range of individuals, including those working in GP practices, prisons, nursing homes and other community-based healthcare providers, as well as members of the public.
Tracey continued: ”The feedback we have received from a number of delegates has been so positive that it prompted us to enlarge our training offer to benefit a wider number of healthcare professionals, as well as members of the public, who are looking to develop their skills set in this area.
“We often find that when people need to get their blood taken or a cannula or catheter fitted that it can be a stressful process for some patients, so it is important that all healthcare professionals both in the wider community and in the hospital have the very best skills possible in order to put patients at their ease and deliver the procedure as efficiently and effectively as possible.
“It can sometimes be quite tricky for a healthcare professional to insert a cannula or catheter with a nervous or anxious patient, so it is essential that anyone undertaking these procedures on a patient is as competent and confident in their role as possible. We can now provide this training to ensure the best possible care for patients.”
- At each session attendees are taught via a series of presentations and lectures, but also have ample opportunity for practical application as well, so that they have as much confidence as possible when undertaking procedures on patients. Attendees have the opportunity to use a full range of equipment as part of this process and on completion of the course each delegate receives a Certificate of Attendance.

- Courses are held at Westbrooke House in Newmarket, but the team recognise the importance of offering flexible solutions to meet individual need so are also able to offer bespoke training on request - and in the past have been able to provide on- site training for larger groups as well. The duration of most courses is one day. Courses are currently scheduled to run throughout the course of the year.
- Fees range from £75 for a half day refresher to £225 for a full days course.
