Arranged by PEM’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) network, the firm’s celebration included being joined by Isaac Harvey MBE for a fireside chat. Isaac is a renowned advocate for disability rights and inclusion and shared personal experiences, insights, and practical advice on creating accessible workplaces and supporting colleagues with disabilities. The inspiring talk was well-received by employees, sparking meaningful conversations and a deeper appreciation for the importance of inclusivity.
To further promote awareness, PEM shared information of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. The sunflower symbol is a discreet way for individuals to indicate they have a hidden disability and may need additional support or understanding. This initiative aims to build an environment where everyone feels comfortable and supported.
In addition to the sunflower initiative, PEM curated a selection of educational materials to broaden the understanding of disability, challenges, language, and how to become a positive ally to people who identify with disability. Their resource list included a variety of books, understanding the Disability Pride Month flag and facts.
During July, PEM visited the Sunflower Care Home in Cottenham, who offer nurse-led care for disabled children with a variety of complex health needs. The visit comes after the PEM Charitable Trust donated a grant of £500 to the ‘Support 4 Sunflowers’ charity which went towards creating an accessible garden that now includes a wheelchair swing and picnic tables especially designed to accommodate wheelchairs.
PEM also sponsored the Histon Hornets Inclusive Football Team for a third year in a row, with the team lifting a winning trophy after taking part in a county-level grassroots tournament. Histon Hornets Inclusive are an open age (16+) football team who support anyone with a physical, neurological, special educational needs (SEN), mental health/wellbeing or any additional need, who may face challenges in accessing mainstream football. The Histon Hornets Inclusive have proudly won two league trophies, finishing top of their Suffolk championship league and top in the Peterborough district football league.
PEM is dedicated to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion within their firm and by celebrating Disability Pride Month, they continue to show their commitment to creating an environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered.
