With around 5 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans each year, recent estimates suggest that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050. Its presence on shorelines, in surface waters and at depth, poses a significant threat to global marine ecosystems.
If we want to fix this global problem, we need to radically rethink the way we generate, use and re-use plastics.
British Antarctic Survey will be hosting a workshop bridging science, policy and business to explore solutions for reducing ocean plastic pollution. At the heart of the event will be the Solutions Showcase, an opportunity for you to present your innovative ideas on how to tackle plastic waste in our oceans. If you have an idea, BAS wants to hear from you and give you the chance to present your solution to industry experts – policymakers, media campaigners, researchers and NGOs.
Here’s the challenge:
How might we reduce plastic waste in our oceans – and prevent it from getting there in the first place?
The challenge covers two main aspects: 1) Removing existing marine plastic waste; 2) Avoiding plastic waste entering the environment.
The top 20 applicants will win:
- The chance to exhibit their solutions to industry influencers at the Ocean Plastics event, with a display stand for the entire day, and a short presentation slot in the middle of the event (with extra time for the top 5 solutions).
- A great opportunity to gain profile for your solution through association with the British Antarctic Survey.
The winning solution selected by our judges will win:
- Six months' free membership of the state-of-the-art Aurora Collaboration Space
- A place on the Serious Impact start-up accelerator programme, with mentoring to help support your solution to success.
The runner-up will win:
- Three months' free membership of the state-of-the-art Aurora Collaboration Space
