Professional conference organisers enjoy a sensual Cambridge experience

A party of members from the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers has just spent two days in Cambridge to see what the city has to offer for conferences and events – and hear how engaging our five senses can play a key part in event success.

Conference Cambridge, the official venue-finding service for the University of Cambridge, the Colleges and other unique properties in the area, hosted the visit which showcased some of the prestigious venues in its portfolio.

On the first day, the Conference Organisers enjoyed a walking tour with See Cambridge Differently; lunch at the Pitt Building; visits to Jesus College, Trinity Hall and Westminster College; a drinks reception at Churchill College; dinner at St John’s Chop House and overnight accommodation at Madingley Hall.

The second day included breakfast at Fitzwilliam College; visits to Robinson College, Clare College and King’s College; and then a walking lunch tour with Cambridge Food Tour.

The final EventSense session at Homerton College comprised presentations on Smell, Touch, Taste, Hear and See, from Cambridge-based experts highlighting the ways in which we can appeal to the senses when organising conferences, to maximise outcomes for delegates.

Judith Sloane, Deputy Manager at Conference Cambridge said: “We were delighted to host this delegation of ABPCO members and to have the opportunity to showcase what Cambridge has to offer, as well as giving a unique insight into what happens to our brains when our senses are stimulated. The group went away with some easy ideas to put into practice at their events. Huge thanks to all our venues who participated.”

Heather Lishman, ABPCO Association Director added: “ABPCO was delighted to be invited to spend two jam-packed days experiencing Cambridge.  When we offer Fam Trips to our members we always promise that they will see new spaces, technology and services as a ‘sneak preview’ and Conference Cambridge rose to this challenge admirably!  The connections that are made at events like this add to the real sense of community that ABPCO members enjoy, and the learning element really showed that Conference Cambridge understood the brief, and more importantly the bespoke needs of our professional conference organisers.”

The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) is the UK’s leading professional body for conference and event organisers and their industry colleagues, working to deliver not-for-profit and association conferences.
