Founded in memory of Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1903), alumnus and sometime Fellow of Trinity Hall and the first editor of The Dictionary of National Biography, the Lecture must be given on ‘some literary subject, including therein criticism, biography and ethics’. First delivered in 1905, a new Leslie Stephen Lecturer is elected every other year.
Having held professorial chairs at York and latterly at Oxford, Professor Lee is well-known not only for her scholarship, including highly-acclaimed biographies of Edith Wharton and of Virginia Woolf, daughter of Leslie Stephen, but also as a reviewer and broadcaster. She has chaired the judges for the Man Booker Prize.
Hermione Lee was appointed CBE in 2003.
All are welcome. Senior members of the University attending should wear gowns.
