Pure quiz challenge raises money for Papworth cancer support group

Local hardware and software solutions company, DisplayLink, claimed the charity quiz throne last week at a fundraising event that raised more than £1,800 for Papworth Hospital Mesothelioma Support Group.

Organised by leading regional recruitment consultancy firm and committed charity supporters, Pure Resourcing Solutions (Pure), the evening saw brainy businesses gathering at Menzies Cambridge Hotel and Golf Club in Bar Hill to raise money for the Hemingford-Abbots based group that provides support for people suffering from mesothelioma, and for their carers and families. The disease is a cancer that affects 2,500 people each year and often starts in the lining of the lungs.

150 masterminds from organisations such as King’s College, Peters Elsworthy & Moore, University of Cambridge, Munro Group, Cambridge County Council and Ridgeons came together to fight it out for the top prize of champagne.  A raffle offered donated prizes including Arts Theatre tickets, a half-day Porsche driving experience from Jardine Motors and a recording studio session from PRS Guitars.

Gill Buchanan, Director of Pure, says: “All teams were amazing in demonstrating their generosity - and intelligence – for a highly regarded charity. A diverse range of talent from our local business community got involved. This came in very useful when a team member from Headline music recording studio stepped in to fix a temporary microphone glitch! Overall, it was a fantastic fundraiser, which also saw the winner of a mass game of heads or tails donating her winnings to the charity.”

Katie Peduto, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the charity, says: “The money raised at the quiz night will continue to fund the twice monthly support group along with social events such as day trips and a Christmas party to give people a welcome break in a supportive environment. We’re grateful for everyone’s support and have big plans for the future including producing an information DVD or booklet that would be developed by patients, carers and families for newly diagnosed patients, and additional professional psychological support for the group.”
