Swavesey student starts summer in style with Apple Watch

A Swavesey Village College student is starting the summer holidays in style - with a new Apple Watch, the prize in a competition for young people who attended Cambridge Network's recent Apprenticeship Jobs Fair.

Han Doronila was presented with the watch yesterday (Monday) when David Keeling, COO at Bango (right) - which kindly donated the prize - and Hilary Laing, COO at Cambridge Network, visited the college. They are pictured with Brendan Scally (left) from the Engineering and IT Department of the college.

Han's name was chosen by random draw to make him the lucky recipient of a Space Grey Apple Watch Sport. He was one of several hundred students who came to the Hauser Forum to find out about apprenticeship opportunities from local employers. Students also benefited from CV and interview skills workshops provided by Pure Resourcing and the Skills Funding Agency.

The fair attracted prospective candidates from a wide range of local schools and colleges, eager to meet with more than 20 exhibiting Network member companies. Over 60 live apprenticeship roles were on offer.

Feedback from employer companies at the inaugural event – held in conjunction with CAP (Cambridge Area 14-19 Partnership), the Skills Funding Agency, QA Apprenticeships and Tech Partnership – has been positive. Most participants reported that they'd met the right quality of candidate and indeed found people they might hire.

David Keeling, who is also a national apprenticeship ambassador, said of the event: "It was fantastic to see that new businesses - on the strength of our engagement over the last six months - are starting to recruit apprentices, which will create sustainable change in Cambridge."

Comments from other employers included:

"Fantastic turnout and enthusiasm"

"The students were focused and open to hearing about the opportunities that careers in the science industries can bring them."

"We thought it went well and certainly there were students who were very engaged and interested in careers in life sciences."
