As mentioned in the “countdown to Christmas” tip, you can use the TODAY function to display the current date. Similarly, the NOW function returns the actual date as well as the time. These functions are not only useful for “countdowns”, but also for when you need to have the current date displayed on a worksheet, regardless of when you open the workbook. Simply type =TODAY() or =NOW() in a cell.
But one of the downsides of this computer age is Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) - which is why I will try and make you fall in love with keyboard shortcuts to enter the current date and/or time into a worksheet.
Here's how:
1. Press CTRL+; to enter today’s date. OR
2. Press CTRL+SHIFT +; to enter the current time.
With thanks to Damian from Inca Digital Printers for the shortcut for the current time!
By the way, the time is only updated when you close and reopen the worksheet.
* Unless stated otherwise, these tips were written for Microsoft Office 2007. Most of what is covered however will also apply to earlier versions.
