Temporary closure of Newmarket Road from 26 March

As part of the works to install an underpass to construct the Chisholm Trail, a new foot and cycle route through the city, Newmarket Road will be closed to all traffic between 8pm on Friday 26 March and 6am on Friday 2 April 2021.

Why is Newmarket Road temporarily closing?

Tarmac Infrastructure has been contracted by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and Cambridgeshire County Council to construct the Chisholm Trail and Abbey-Chesterton Bridge Project. Together this path and bridge, along with an underpass of Newmarket Road, will form Phase 1 of a new foot and cycle route through the city.

Further information about the project can be found here

GCP writes: "We have now reached the stage of the project where we are planning to install an underpass under Newmarket Road. To do this work safely we will need to temporarily close Newmarket Road to all traffic.

"When completed the underpass will mean those using the Chisholm Trail will not have to use a pelican crossing to cross Newmarket Road – giving pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorised users a safe crossing and helping motor traffic flow more freely along Newmarket Road."

If you have a question for the project team or would like to hear more about the arrangements for diversions while the road is closed, please sign up for an online webinar on Monday 22 March at 6pm.
