The charity event followed in the footsteps of the famous Chariots of Fire film that tells the story of Harold Abrahams and his bid to win a gold medal in the 1924 Olympics. Each member of the team ran the 1.7 mile course through Cambridge, completing the race in 1 hour 42 minutes and 49 seconds to secure 3rd place in the Ladies Veteran category.
Most importantly, the team is set to raise more than £3,000 for this year’s ‘Chariots of Fire’ charities, Cam Sight and Cambridge Past, Present and Future.
The ‘Grey Shades of Fifty’ team was assembled by Lily Bacon, executive vice president of Cambridge-based RealVNC who set out to bring together some of the most influential local businesswomen for a good cause. The other members of the team were Claire Ruskin, CEO at Cambridge Network; Dame Mary Archer, chairman of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Sheila Stuart, Mayor of Cambridge; Penny Walkinshaw, High Sheriff for Cambridgeshire, and her deputy and local lawyer Caroline Stenner.
“Despite the fact that most of us had not run since school days, everyone exceeded expectations to win bronze medals and raise money for two worthy charities,” said RealVNC’s Lily Bacon. Dame Mary Archer who is a patron of the Cam Sight charity that supports local people with sight loss praised her ‘dream team’.
