The tourism website for South Cambridgeshire – created by the District Council – has welcomed thousands of visitors and highlighted hundreds of venues and events in its first year.

www.visitsouthcambs.co.uk launched in September 2021, with local residents and visitors encouraged to use the website to explore, discover and enjoy what South Cambridgeshire has to offer in terms of activities, places to eat, cultural attractions and green spaces. The website also provides B&B, camping, hotel and self-catering listings, making it easier for visitors to the area to find a place to stay to make the most of the district.

A South Cambridgeshire District Council creation, the website was the first site dedicated to promoting the district’s tourist sector businesses, making it easier for people to have more fun and discover hidden gems closer to home and, by doing so, support local jobs and economies.

During the past 12 months, around 200 local venues have enjoyed free listings and more than 230 local events have been promoted, from village fetes to art exhibitions.

The site now has had more than 8,000 unique visitors from around the world, reaching countries including America, Australia, and Japan.

There are also associated social media accounts to support and promote the brand on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with a LinkedIn page under development. People can follow them for regular fun updates on national and local campaigns such as Heritage Open Days, promoting local markets or events happening at the weekend.

During the year ahead, the Council is developing further new online content including detailed walks, themed itineraries and premium listings. Local tourism, hospitality and leisure businesses and event organisers can sign up for a free listing if they haven’t already.

Residents and businesses will also be encouraged to share what they love most about getting out and about in South Cambridgeshire on social media using #WeLoveSouthCambs to build-up even more recommendations and insider secrets about the district’s hidden gems. Residents and businesses can simply use #WeLoveSouthCambs to highlight who serves the best ice cream, who gives the friendliest service, where’s the most scenic country walk or most relaxing pub garden and much more about what makes the area special.

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Cllr Peter McDonald, said: “I said one year ago that we were aiming to create a treasure trove of local information – and I’m pleased to say that we have done just that. It’s been a pleasure to finally be able to shine a spotlight on South Cambridgeshire’s high-quality places to visit and eat during the past 12 months. There is so much on offer throughout the district, whether it be different types of accommodation, independent shops, things to do and places to eat. Visit South Cambs will continue to pull all of these activities and venues together into one convenient online directory. During the year ahead, we’re looking forward to developing the website even further; I’m particularly looking forward to helping more of us get active through our future detailed walking guides. For now though, I’d encourage local people and those from further afield to continue visiting the website and exploring, discovering and enjoying what’s on our doorstep."
