The event, run by South Cambridgeshire District Council in partnership with Living Sport and England Netball, is aimed at adults that want to try something different to get active, especially if they don’t want to take part in the fast-paced game. It’s a chance to enjoy a sport that is less intense, but just as much fun and rewarding.
Walking sports mean you get the benefits of being physically active, such as increased energy, reduced stress and contributing towards a strong heart, without the impact on the joints that running has.
Residents from across Cambridgeshire are welcome to attend the event, which will take place at Swavesey Village College’s Sports Centre on Saturday 22 September from 9:30am to 12:30pm. It is part of the Let’s Get Moving Cambridgeshire programme which aims to improve the health of communities, specifically be increasing the amount of exercise people do.
People can come as teams, with friends or on their own. There will be fun games to play to introduce the game of Walking Netball and full seven‐a‐side games to get stuck into. Additionally, there will be plenty of time for refreshments and meeting new people as well as trying out the brand-new sport of Walking Squash.
The event is open to people of all abilities and you don’t have to have played netball or squash before to attend. All rules will be explained and introduced as you play. Residents wanting to take part just need to go to Swavesey Village College Sports Centre on the day and play for just £3 per person, including refreshments.
South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cabinet Member for Customer Service and Business Improvement, Cllr Philippa Hart, said: “This is a super opportunity to try out walking netball or walking squash for the first time, or get back into one of the sports if you’ve been off the court for a while. We all know how beneficial exercise is so this is a great chance to get moving, and may even inspire you to go on and play either sport regularly. This is just one way that we are working to help communities across South Cambridgeshire be active and healthy, and enjoy playing sport.”
South Cambridgeshire District Council’s local member for Swavesey, Cllr Sue Ellington, added: “Walking netball and squash are great for exercise as well as having fun with other likeminded people. Come and enjoy a great session.”
