The world's first 1000mph car? Cambridge technology and the Bloodhound Project

Cambridge Network's next event on Thursday November 7th will focus on the awe-inspiring Bloodhound SSC land speed record attempt. The Bloodhound Project highlights the best of the UK’s engineering prowess: this event showcases some of the Cambridge technology that is contributing to this adventure.

The Bloodhound Supersonic Car aims to smash the current land speed record by attempting speeds of around 1000mph, pushing boundaries in aeronautical engineering and boosting engineering education at the same time.  Its mission is to confront the impossible and overcome it using Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths – inspiring the next generation with the challenges and triumphs of the adventure along the way.

At Robinson College, Cambridge next Thursday (November 7th from 6pm), Tony Parraman, Head of Sponsor Liaison, will talk about the project, its challenges, boundaries and timescales.  While he can’t bring the car with him he will bring a model of it, as well as the Bloodhound Driving Experience ‘sit in’ driving game. Those attending will also see some incredible footage of the various tests the car has undergone so far.

A number of Cambridge high-tech companies are involved at various stages of the project. Technology and design consultancy, Cambridge Design Partnership, has finalised the design of the Bloodhound steering wheel.  They took the initial concepts and developed them into a design that met the demanding requirements expected during the record attempt.
