Case studies
AI: AiSentia
We supported AiSentia, a spinout from Oxford University, to develop a medical device quality prototype and website that enables doctors to digitally add contrast to CT images. Our team transformed research-quality code written by a medical student to improve performance and enable it to run at scale on the cloud.
Data visualisation: Poseidon
This collaboration with the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford University resulted in an extended user interface that empowers decision-makers to explore spatial fishing patterns and visualise fish biomass to model sustainable fishing approaches.
Hardware integration: OpticFlock
We worked with the Department of Biology at Oxford University to transform their research into a commercial product. This software monitors entire chicken flocks and determines in real-time the health of the flock. Farmers are given early warning indicators of flock health remotely via phone or computer. Edge compute software development and systems integration with remote hardware using Raspberry Pi computers with onboard cameras, fitted directly into chicken warehouses.
Mobile and desktop apps: WaveGo Mobile
We developed the Android and iOS app WaveGo Mobile for Wave Illumination, a self-contained spinout from a large spectroscopy company. Our team transformed a prototype into a market ready app (including an administration portal) that displays the complex properties of light to its users in an intuitive manner on small screen sizes and integrates with an off-the-shelf spectrometer.
Medical devices: QCovid® Risk Calculator
Working with Oxford University and NHS Digital, we transformed academic code into a user-friendly tool that estimates the risk of hospitalisation or death from COVID-19. By optimising the algorithm and creating a user-friendly website, the software analysed patient medical records in England, adding 1.4 million people to the shielding list.
Cloud processing: Microbira
The Microbira web application, classified as a form of medical device, where we transformed research scripts that combined artificial intelligence with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy into a multi-user, scalable and market-ready software tool for microorganism identification.
System C wider company
System C Healthcare is a British provider of health systems for the NHS and Social Care Adult, Children and Education sectors. With almost 40 years of experience working in partnership with customers, our range of digital platforms and tools provide a complete view of the patient across all care settings, helping integrate services and improve treatment.
We are a market-leading, integrated Electronic Patient Record (EPR) supplier with over 350,000 users. With a functionally rich NHS-focused Patient Administration System (PAS) at its heart, CareFlow is designed to fully interoperate with strategic departmental and niche clinical solutions while providing EPR capabilities to the NHS.
Our mission is to deliver ‘technology with the power to connect and transform health and care for all’.
CareFlow EPR is the fastest-selling EPR in England, with the second largest deployed base. 30 NHS Trusts are using or currently deploying our EPR (ranging from smaller specialist hospitals with a few hundred beds to large teaching hospitals with 20,000+ users). We have a proven track record in implementation, with many deployments completed in 12 months or less. We also believe we are the only EPR supplier to have completed three successful remote EPR deployments within the COVID-19 pandemic period.
We are:
- The number two supplier in Acute Electronic Patient Records with 30 NHS Trusts deployed, or currently deploying, CareFlow.
- The number one supplier in mobile decision support systems, with deployments at over 38 Trusts and 750 wards, performing over 6 million assessments a month with our electronic observations mobile application.
- The number one supplier in Social Care, with 60% of local authorities with Social Service responsibilities using our Liquidlogic software (deployed for both Adults and Children’s Social Services).
- The number one supplier of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) systems across the UK, with a 23% market share for inpatient EPMA and 21% for outpatient prescribing. The solution is deployed in a wide range of specialities from the Emergency Department (ED) through to Community, including high intensity environments such as Intensive Care Units (ICU). In England, we have recorded:
- 70 million prescriptions (including changes to prescriptions) – around 44 million a year.
- 332 million administrations (includes non-administrations) – around 217 million a year.
- The number one hospital Pharmacy system supplier across the UK, including supply of the national Wales Pharmacy system, and the leading supplier of Pharmacy Stock Control solutions, with a 56% market share in England.
- £4.6 billion of the NHS’s annual £7 billion hospital drug spend goes through CareFlow Pharmacy.
- The number one supplier in Child Health (covering 6.4 million children), which is 55% of 0-19 year olds.
- 99.9% of all neonatal sites use our BadgerNet solution, with 45% of all pregnancies managed through the system, and 200,000 women using our maternity Personal Health Record (PHR) in the last year alone.
