Submissions open for the 2024 Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards

This is a joint news release on behalf of Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council, and the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service.

Awards

An awards scheme to celebrate Greater Cambridge’s building design and construction industries is now open for submissions.

The Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service and the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI) are inviting entries for the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2024.

The awards celebrate the best in the design and construction of our built environment, and the skilled people who make it happen.

Previous winners of the awards include the New College Library, Magdalene College, which went on to win the Stirling Prize 2022. Winners in 2023 included Ironworks on Mill Road, Homerton College Dining Hall and the Entopia Building, Regent Street.

Judging for the Building Awards covers all aspects of the building, including design, sustainability, engineering, workmanship, and construction.

This year there is an additional awards category, for Best New Landscape.

Alison Wring, CFCI Chair, said: We are excited to be supporting the annual Design and Construction Awards, coming together to celebrate everything that the Greater Cambridge region has accomplished within our geography. We celebrate individuals, and teams, with the creativity and passion to deliver exemplar facilities within the built environment - awards across the spectrum of the industry highlighting our regional prowess, envied at national and international level of the continually high standards we achieve and surpass.”

Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Executive Councillor for Planning, Building Control and Infrastructure, Cambridge City Council, said: “This area is rightly celebrated nationally for the quality of architecture and urban design in our new buildings. Throughout Greater Cambridge, these awards recognise the finest design and construction work on a range of scales, from small projects to large developments. They showcase the diversity of skills and people that contribute to the success of the construction industry. The winners of these awards are chosen based on their architectural design, environmental sustainability, and economic and social impact. The awards also aim to promote best practice in the industry and to celebrate the achievements of local professionals.”

Cllr Dr. Tumi Hawkins, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning Policy and Delivery, said: “By presenting the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards, the two Councils can demonstrate what can be achieved when developers and local authorities work together. The awards recognise individuals, companies, and organisations that demonstrate excellence in the design, construction, and completion of projects in the City of Cambridge and South Cambs. Please consider entering a recently completed building project, contractor, or person working in the construction industry that you think deserves recognition for the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2024.”

If you know of a recently completed building project, landscape, contractor, or person working in the construction industry that you think is deserving of recognition then please consider entering them for the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2024.

Entries should be submitted by 8 January 2024, and the award winners will be announced in a ceremony on 4 March. Tickets are available here: https://www.cfci.org.uk/event/greater-cambridge-design-and-construction-awards-2023-copy/
