Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is hosting a conversation with award-winning science journalist, author, and broadcaster Angela Saini to mark International Women’s Day.
During her talk “How men came to rule”, Angela will discuss how male dominance and gendered oppression became embedded in societies across the world. The free public event will take place at ARU’s Cambridge campus on Friday, 3 March (6pm).
In addition to presenting science programmes for the BBC, Angela’s writing has appeared in the New Scientist, The Sunday Times, National Geographic, and Wired.
Her book Superior: The Return of Race Science was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize and appeared on book of year lists in several publications, including Vanity Fair, The New Statesman, Financial Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and Nature. Her latest book is The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule.
Angela’s talk at ARU will explore the complex ways in which different forms of oppression have contributed to the clamping down on women’s rights and freedoms over thousands of years.
Event organiser Dr Claudia Wascher, Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences at ARU, said: “We are delighted to welcome Angela back to ARU to mark this year’s International Women's Day, which is an opportunity to highlight the many extraordinary women in our community who continue to fight for a world where difference is valued and celebrated.
“Angela’s writing focuses on how science interacts with society, and especially how it affects marginalised groups, and I know that her talk will be both inspiring and informative.
“This event should provide lessons in understanding the roots of gendered oppression, as well as helping us call out all forms of inequality and discrimination whenever we see it. Together we can forge equality and collectively we can all #EmbraceEquity.”
The free public event on 3 March is open to all and is hosted by the Athena SWAN and Race Equality Committees of ARU’s Faculty of Science & Engineering. To register, please visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-men-came-to-rule-in-conversation-with-angela-saini-tickets-516964533837
The event runs from 6pm, and Angela will be signing copies of her new book The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule following the talk.
