‘Love Your Local Market’ is a national celebration of the UK’s public markets which takes place every year.
The campaign is led by the National Association of British Market Authorities and supported by Cambridge City Council, which manages the city’s historic general market, as well as the Sunday arts and crafts market, and the All Saints’ Garden Art and Craft Market.
‘Love Your Local Market 2016’ runs until Tuesday 31 May. This year’s theme is ‘Youth’ with some events aimed at attracting the next generation of market traders.
Cambridge’s public market celebrations are being promoted through a programme of ‘Love Your Local Market’ events and activities.
On Bank Holiday Monday 30 May, there will be an opportunity for young people to run their own market stalls free for a day at the city’s central market.
Other events to look out for during the fortnight include a classic car rally in the Market Square with Cambridge Classic Car Club on Sunday 29 May, live cooking demonstrations, the chance to meet Princess Elsa from ‘Frozen’ on Saturday 28 May, digital workshops, live music and free bike health checks. Shoppers will also be able to pick up a free Love Your Local Market shopping bag.
Cllr Carina O’Reilly, Executive Councillor for City Centre and Public Places, said: “The Love Your Local Market celebration highlights the integral part markets play in the heart of our community.
“They not only provide a great commercial environment for small businesses but are a valuable asset and key focal point for the city centre.
“We’re lucky to have three thriving markets in Cambridge, selling an amazing array of products in Cambridge and I’d encourage everyone to get out and discover them this month.”
