The talk has been organised by Cambridge Refugee Scholarship Campaign and will focus on refugee integration into society. The panel will comprise of several people engaged with providing support for refugees and specialists on the subject.
Mr Zeichner says: “There are many barriers for refugees when they arrive in in a new country that prevents them from integrating into their new community. It is important that we recognise the challenges it poses for refugees that have often gone through unimaginable experiences. Sadly, the Government does not make things easier for refugees and I am interested to hear from the panellists what they think I can do as a MP to put pressure on the Government to do more.”
“I am proud that Cambridge has a strong reputation of welcoming refugees and wanting to support them as best as possible to integrate them into the city. Our City Council has recently celebrated resettling over 100 refugees, which is a fantastic achievement and one to be celebrated. I know however that the City Council is eager to do more to help those in need of a new home and an opportunity to rebuild what was lost.”
Rabia Nasimi is the Strategic Development Manager at the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA) and will be chairing the ‘Bridging the Gap’ panel discussion. Rabia arrived as a refugee fleeing the Taliban aged five-years-old. Now, alongside her ACAA role she is studying for a PhD at Cambridge University.
Rabia Nasimi said: “For many people, reaching a safe destination and achieving refugee status is only half of the journey. The process of integration into a new society and culture can be just as challenging as the journey itself.
"At the ACAA we take a holistic approach to supporting refugees. For example, our Women’s Project helps female refugees to learn English, access and navigate relevant services, build social connections and guide their children as they start life in a new country.
"I hope that this conversation results in a better understanding of what refugees experience on their arrival in the UK and what methods can be put in place to help these individuals reach their full potential.”
The event will take place in the Boys Smith Room, Fisher Building at St John’s College.
