Cambridge MP meets unaccompanied refugees enrolled at local college

The students are now undertaking courses at CRC to further their education and hope to gain asylum in the UK. The visit will be an opportunity for Mr Zeichner to hear from the students about their experiences of living and learning in Cambridge, as well as to hear from the college about the contribution these students are making.
 
Mr Zeichner will be meeting several of the students for a second time; his initial meeting with them was in March at a charity event where some of the students showcased films about their experiences. The films were created during a project called ‘Surviving to Thriving‘ and brought together refugees and asylum seekers from across the county to help them develop leadership and practical life skills.
 
Mr Zeichner says: “I am very pleased to be meeting the students, some of whom will be for the second time. The experiences that many unaccompanied refugees and asylum seekers go through is harrowing, and it is inspiring that there is a determination from these students to get the education and skills in order to improve their opportunities.“
 
“I remember when I met some of the students in March I was moved by the films that they produced. It was quite clear that their investment in education was important to them and there was a strong sense of determination despite facing great difficulties navigating the asylum process. These students will be great assets to our country and I am confident the people of Cambridge will recognise the contribution they are making.“

The visit coincides with Refugee Week, during which Mr Zeichner will be taking part in a number of events to bring greater awareness to the experiences of refugees, particularly during their journeys to Europe and the UK.  Tomorrow (Saturday 23 June) Mr Zeichner will be taking part in the SOS Children’s Villages UK ‘Walk-a-mile‘ campaign, which will end with a Great Get Together event in memory of Jo Cox, former Labour MP murdered two years ago.
