Cambridge MP petitions the Government to drop plans to change nursery funding

Yesterday (Tuesday), Daniel Zeichner MP delivered a local petition to Parliament on behalf of worried constituents who fear that the Government’s plans to change nursery funding will affect early years education in the city.

Mr Zeichner joined local campaigners and councillors in opposing Government changes which would see local authorities across the country pass on 95% of funding from central government directly to early years providers. This would put nurseries and children’s centres across Cambridgeshire in a difficult position as they are already struggling to properly fund the statutory 15 hours of childcare which, from this September, will rise to 30 hours.

Daniel Zeichner MP, speaking as he prepared to represent his constituents’ views in the House, said: “The Government needs to rethink the funding formula for childcare quickly. I have visited many nurseries since this proposal was initially put forward and I know that excellent early years providers in our city will be struggling to provide the same service as they are now.

“I am pleased to be able to speak up for many of my constituents who want the Government to rethink and I will be attending a public meeting on Saturday 25 February at 2.00pm at the N C I Sports & Social Club (1 Holland St, Cambridge CB4 3DL) hosted by my colleague Cllr Jocelynne Scutt to discuss how we can take the campaign further.”
