Commenting on the report, Daniel Zeichner MP said: “The Centre for Cities report underlines the need for the Government to respond positively to the Case for Cambridge that I and other local MPs have been putting. We need a step-change in the provision of genuinely affordable housing, to ensure the future prosperity of Cambridge and tackle the unacceptable levels of inequality in our City."
The report highlights the issue of income inequality, as shown by the higher Gini coefficient (0.460) compared to the UK as a whole (0.332). The issue of housing affordability also remains critical. Recently, Cambridge secured an extra £70m from the Government through the devolution deal which will lead to 500 additional council houses but more remains to be done.
