Over 50 Cambridge ‘indies’ have signed up to be part of the campaign, which will launch with live music, entertainment and children’s activities in the Market Square on Saturday 4th July, between 11am and 3pm. Adam the Ambassador, the Cambridge BID mascot, will also be on hand to greet people with a friendly wave and a smile.
Throughout Independents’ Week members of the public will be able to take advantage of a range of special offers, competitions and events – designed to create a feel-good factor that highlights the value independent businesses add to the high street experience.
Shoppers will be able to enjoy a tasty homemade cookie with purchases at Petrus, pop into the Pink Provence Party at Cambridge Wine Merchants (6th – 12th July) or take the selfie challenge at Chocolat Chocolat for the opportunity to win a chocolate bouquet. They’ll be able to benefit from 15% off purchases at Ta Bouche and Cambridge Framing and Mirror Centre, or enter a competition to win a year’s supply of Big-Ass Burritos at Nanna Mexico. On Saturday 11th July shoppers in historic Trinity Street will experience a unique ‘live window’ event, as retailers bring their shop windows to life with toymaking at When I Was a Kid, crochet at Brora, makeovers at Space NK and live yoga at Sweaty Betty.
Becky Burrell, Marketing & Commercial Manager at Cambridge BID, which represents the interests of 1,100 city centre businesses and co-ordinates Independents’ Week locally, says: “When you shop in the centre of Cambridge you genuinely have a positive impact on our city. For every £1 spent locally around 50p to 70p of that money re-circulates back into the local economy – compare that to out-of-town or online purchases for which only 5p from every £1 trickles back to the local community.
"Independents' Week is all about raising the profile of our wonderful ‘indie’ businesses and encouraging people to experience their passion, great products and exceptional customer service, during July and beyond.”
Independents’ Week is a national campaign that runs annually in July to highlight the important role that smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve, the local economy they contribute to, and the retail sector as a whole.
