Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, is set to join the Cambridge University Amnesty Group (CUAI) and the University and College Union (UCU) at a vigil in remembrance of Giulio Regeni, marking the eighth anniversary of his tragic death. The event will take place at Great St. Mary's Church on January 25th 2024, beginning at 18:00.
Giulio Regeni, an Italian graduate student conducting research in Egypt, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in 2016. His case remains a symbol of the challenges faced by researchers and the urgent need for justice in cases of human rights abuses.
The vigil aims to call on the Egyptian authorities to transparently investigate Regeni's murder, identify and apprehend the perpetrators, and bring them to justice. Participants will gather for a minute's silence, paying tribute to Giulio Regeni and other victims of human rights abuses in Egypt.
Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, expressed his commitment to seeking justice for Giulio Regeni and holding those responsible accountable. In a statement, he said, “I have long supported the campaign to provide closure over Giulio Regeni's tragic fate. It is crucial for the Egyptian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into his death, ensuring accountability and justice. I applaud the work of the Cambridge University Amnesty Group in continuing to call for justice for Giulio and fully support this event."
