Domino Printing expands specialist solutions to help manufacturers fight COVID-19

Domino Printing is strengthening its support for manufacturers of respirator face masks and surgical masks with a new ink that delivers high levels of legibility and contrast when printing essential data onto the products.

Domino is supplying its BK119 ink – originally created for the food packaging industry – to businesses making medical devices and personal protective equipment (PPE) to help combat COVID-19.

James Gibbins, Product Manager – Fluids at Domino said: “Both respirator face masks and surgical masks have played a key role in the global fight against COVID-19. In the last year we have seen a significant rise in demand for these products, with many manufacturers making them for the very first time.

“Respirator face masks are classified as PPE whilst surgical masks fall under the category of medical devices – both of which are subject to compulsory coding requirements within the countries in which they are sold. The capability and expertise to apply the necessary safety and quality codes are crucial, both for legislative compliance and consumer safety.”

Legibility and contrast are essential to comply with regulatory standards and BK119, used in Domino’s Gx-Series of thermal inkjet printers, meets both criteria.

The ink is also fast-drying with excellent adhesion properties making it ideal for coding onto non-porous respirator face masks produced on high-speed manufacturing lines. As coding is applied before masks are die-cut into their final form, a robust, fast-drying ink reduces the risk of a code becoming smudged or unreadable during die-cutting or packaging.
