Andrew founded regenerative medical device company OrthoMimetics Ltd on the basis of his doctoral research which was conducted as part of a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He led OrthoMimetics as CEO from incorporation to successful trade-sale exit, during which time the company raised £5million in venture capital, established commercial-scale manufacturing capabilities and brought its flagship product through pilot clinical trials to market. In 2009, he led a process that culminated in the profitable sale of the company to TiGenix in one of the most successful small-cap exits of 2009 worldwide.
Dr Lynn commented, “I’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed some success and to have learned from many good mentors as an entrepreneur, and am pleased to now have the chance to make a contribution to others looking to turn innovations into reality. My participation in the Centre’s 2005 Ignite programme helped me turn my research ideas into a business. So, it seems right to continue my connection with CfEL and I’m looking forward to working with Shai and the team.”
Andrew more recently served as CEO of University of Cambridge spin-out CamGaN Ltd, which was formed in 2010 to commercialise a novel light-emitting diode (LED) technology for energy-efficient lighting. He worked with CamGaN’s scientific founders to commercialise the company’s gallium-nitride-on-silicon technology, and led a process that culminated in CamGaN’s rapid and profitable acquisition by Plessey Semiconductors.
The Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, Dr Shai Vyakarnam, said, “This appointment recognises the extraordinary achievements Andrew has made as an entrepreneur within a very short time. He has set a truly great example to all those young, aspiring entrepreneurs aiming to transform University research-based innovations. We are very pleased he has agreed to give some of his time and expertise to help us generate the entrepreneurs of the future.”
Andrews’s work has earned him recognition from Technology Review Magazine’s TR35 and the Science|Business Academic Enterprise Awards as one of the world’s top young innovators, leaders and entrepreneurs. He joins an illustrious group of 10 other entrepreneurs and experts from various backgrounds and disciplines who contribute about a week of their time per year to inspire and advise aspiring entrepreneurs through mentoring, presentations and clinics at CfEL programmes and activities.
